y-label in plots without tilting your head

When plotting data with an x- and a y-axis and you label the axes, it's customary that the labels are parallel to the axes. A typical example from here:

This makes the y-label hardly readable without tilting your head, doesn't it? If you the label is a bit longer, rotating it horizontally would perhaps waste too much space.
