Wirelessly communicating with a vehicle to get VIN number

I'm working on project that would make it easy for a customer to easily obtain their vehicle's VIN from their mobile device. Ideally, I would like the user to sit in their vehicle, then press a button on their mobile device and have the vehicle provide its VIN and possibly other information on the screen.

Is there a wireless way to communicate with a vehicle via a mobile device (Bluetooth or SMS) to obtain its VIN (vehicle identification number). Is there a API that would facilitate this? Is this even possible?
