Why do some web shops not allow opening a product page in a new tab? [on hold]

It seems that some web shops try to force the user to open the detail page for a product in a new tab. Ctrl-clicking the product will still open the page in the current tab, and you'll have to explicitly use the context menu to do it.

I have even seen a website where every product on the overview page doesn't seem to be accessible via a concrete link, but rather programmed only with Javascript, i.e. you can't even open the page in a new tab using the context menu.

What is the purpose of such a design? Do they want to deliberately discourage product comparison? I am always annoyed at such websites as I always compare multiple products at the same time. It negatively impacts my experience.
