What is the best way to organize my personal/work computer folder/file structure in order to be organized by design?
It may not sound like a ux.stackexchange question, but I really think that UX designers may be the best people to answer something like that
I want to organize my computer's folder organization structure and I am having a hard time finding any thorough bibliography or systems/principles that will help me with that.
What I Use my Computer for
Apart from personal use
I work on many self-initiated(no clients) projects of an artistic nature, using many different file formats:
- Simple images like .jpg, .png
- Design formats like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
- Video projects like Premiere or Final Cut and all the raw video files like .mov or .mp4
- Writing projects with many .txt, .markdown, .fountain files
The ammount of my projects is calculated in tenths while the single pieces comprising the projects (files) is in the thousands.
Ideally what I want is the following
- A system that works on every operating-system (macOS, Windows, Linux), and not relying on another piece of software to work
- Single location of file
- Only one possible location of file by design (no second-guessing in retrieving or storing)
- File location shouldn't be tied-up with a project location (because sometimes a 'file' becomes part of another project)
- Easy to add new file types (that I haven't yet used)
Any suggestion of what works for you, or even 'how should I think/what to focus on' to solve the problem, as well as books, systems or principles that will expand my understanding are more than welcomed.
