What is best practice when it comes to naming layers in design sources?

I'm asking as I don't collaborate often with other UI/UX designers to hand off files. When that time comes, I want to know if items and groups in the layer list are supposed to be named. My artboards are named appropriately but everything else inside of them is left as is. In the photoshop days, naming was best practice.
