USB Compliance – am I violating anything legally by not getting a VID and completing compliance testing? [on hold]

I have a device I plan to sell that uses USB protocol but it will not be used often...anyways I do not want to go through USB compliance testing and buy a VID...but I will NOT use a USB logo. Am I in compliance legally? Am I allowed to use the term "USB" in the instruction for use manual? Does anyone have feedback? Thanks, D
