Styling of a checkmark indicating selection in a list should check(s) appear on right or left?

In a web app with a component of a item list with a single selection or list with multi selection states. What do you think is the better way to show state of selection on the elements?

Should the checkmark appear on the left or the right of the item name. note: you can click anywhere in the item to toggle selection.
