Sidebar : what content to show in sidebar?

How to decide what content can be/should be shown in sidebar?

A sidenav makes sense, but a list of filenames might probably not, sometimes the sidenav overflows and the default scrollbar does not look as pleasing to the eye. Sometimes the content might be better suited in a modal. Any inputs?
