Is mining crypto-currencies rather than showing ads beneficial on the UX side of things?

More and more users are saying "no" to ads by using blockers and one of the primary profit models of the web is dying. Which is why it's no surprise that you may have seen articles speculating about having each user assist in CC mining to support sites - however I haven't found much about whether or not users are OK with this, or may prefer it to ads or not.

Without going into the specifics of GPU mining in the web browser (not the purpose of this site anyway), let's just assume a site can be sustained financially if they replace their ads with a GPU-based mining script which calculates its usage in such a way as to only use the user's GPU so as to not interfere with its current load (if the user is playing a game and their GPU is already under as much load as it can handle, slower CPU mining is used instead).

Also, the user is informed in some minor way when they enter the site, and given the option to switch back to ads or select a premium membership if they prefer not to participate in CC mining with their system.

What UX issues might there be with this website funding strategy? Have any UX polls / studies been published on the average user's opinion about this? It seems like it could be hugely beneficial for free sites, especially big ones like Wikipedia with limited alternate funding options, so I'm curious about whether it would be viable to consider this as a funding model for future web applications that I work on - but I wanted to ask other UX enthusiasts before I make that suggestion.
