How to structure Layout / visual design to reduce information overload?

I'm currently researching about optimisation of visual design for landingpages on Desktop. Does anyone know scientific guidelines / good papers about position, amount and size of text and images on UI?

So for example on a page like the New York Times - how many images or headlines should be presented at the first viewport to not create an information overload?
