How big do you think a central panel would be?

First of all, I'm new here so if the question is off-topic or duplicated, I'm sorry.

My question is about a desktop application. I've a main panel centered on the window. The question is:

How big do you think a central panel would be?

I expect some answers like:

  • %: Width 50% of the window and height 90%
  • Outside fixed: Width outside 100px and variable panel, height 10px outside
  • Inside fixed: A panel with width 1000px and height 400px
  • Mixed: A mix of previous

The question has to be general for all resolutions, let's say higher than 1024 x 768
