Controls for to select from large numbers of options on forms [closed]

I would really like to know about any support people have come up for contexts when large amounts of data (millions of options) have to be selected from on form controls - such as multi-select lists (in drop downs) or single select lists.

Clearly search functionality and sort functionality is useful. Also loading spinners for slow load.

Are there any other issues to consider?
