Chromebook enter key attached to slash [on hold]

I recently noticed that on my chromebook laptop, the built-in keyboard has a little extension that attaches the backslash key to the enter key. It is the only key on the keyboard that does that. I know that, as covered in this similar question, some keyboards have a larger, backwards- "L" shaped enter key, which this slightly resembles, but in this case it's just two regular keys, one of which is extended just enough to touch the other.

Is there any specific, known UX (and/or keyboard) design principle that would justify or entail this choice? I can't think of any actual functionality it adds, and if it's a design element, it seems like an odd one. My only guess that it might be intended as a visual cue of some sort? It is almost exactly the same as this picture below, except on my keyboard, the backslash key is extended, not the enter.
