When using read only mode for forms in material design do you prefer to add an edit icon in the field input or do you use lists?

When using read only mode for forms in material design do you prefer to add an edit icon in the field input or do you use lists? Using lists make it look completely different from the edit mode with fields. So I am in doubt here.
