Does incorrectly timed horizontal and vertical sync damage a monitor? [closed]

Recently, I got the urge to hijack a VGA connection with an Arduino so that I can draw on the screen.

However, I have heard from multiple sources including Ben Eater and posts from retrocomputing.stackexchange.com that it is possible to fry a CRT if you incorrectly time the horizontal and vertical sync. Does this principle also apply to modern flatscreen displays? I have not tested my theory yet as I don't want to risk damaging any of my monitors.
