Can 3D maps be as usable as 2D on mobile?
I'm trying to experiment with 3D interfaces on mobile using 3Ds elements and 3d maps. The reason I would like to do 3D is to make it contextual. So you can zoom inside a public bus or train and visualize/interact with things inside.

Can 3D maps be as usable as 2D? Are there good HCI/design science research-based papers on these types of interfaces?
I understand that 3D maps are overkill and too much heavy for current mobile phones now, but that's not a concern for now, as this is more an experimentation for the upcoming future.
