“Generation Style” by Eric Meyer—An Event Apart video
Consider, if you will, CSS generated content. We can, and sometimes even do, use it to insert icons before or after pieces of text. Occasionally we even use it add a bit of extra information. And once upon a time, we pressed it into service as a hack to get containers to wrap around their floated children. That’s all fine—but what good is generated content, really? What can we do with it? What are its limitations? And how far can we push content generation in a new landscape full of flexible boxes, grids, and more? In this hour-long talk recorded live at An Event Apart DC 2019, Eric Meyer turns a spotlight on generated content and shows how it can be a generator of creativity as well as a powerful, practical tool for everyday use.

“Designing for Personalities” by Sarah Parmenter—An Event Apart video
Just as our designs today must accommodate differences of gender, cultural background, and other factors, it’s time to create apps, websites, and internal processes that account for still another strand of human diversity: our very different personality types.
In this presentation captured live at An Event Apart in 2019, designer Sarah Parmenter shares real-life case studies demonstrating how businesses and organizations large and small are learning to adjust the thinking behind their websites and processes to account for the wishes, needs, and comfort levels of all kinds of people.
We know that the world is full of different conventions—currency, measuring systems, and more—and our web forms address these differences. Let’s do the same for the emotional and psychological assumptions behind our customer profiles.

Carbon Offsets and Captioning
As our 2020 event schedules take shape (Washington DC is now available!), we have two new initiatives to tell you about that will affect every show this year.
First, we’ll have live captioning at all our 2020 conferences. This live captioning will complement, not replace, the assistive listening devices we make available at every event. If you’d like to know more, or to reserve an assistive-listening device for a show, please contact us to let us know.
Second, in addition to our continued work to reduce waste at our shows, we’ll be purchasing carbon offsets that exceed the total carbon footprint of our shows by approximately 50 percent. The offsets will cover staff and speaker travel and lodging, attendee travel and lodging, and the venue inputs. We’ll have a certificate at each conference showing the offset amount and date of purchase. Our thanks to TerraPass for their event-focused carbon offset calculator!
